New Sunday Evening Mass Times

St.John's-ct

Sunday evening Masses at St. John’s Catholic Church on the Creighton University campus will be shifted to 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning Sunday, Aug. 26.

Masses had previously been celebrated at 4:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. “It makes everything stronger,” says St. John’s Parish pastor the Rev. Lorn Snow, SJ. “We’re able to pool our resources, resulting in stronger ministries and music ensembles. From student feedback, we anticipate that this will be a great experience for students.”

The 7 p.m. Mass will feature the Evensong choir ensemble that previously provided music for the 8:3o p.m. Mass. This popular group, whose repertoire ranges from chant to contemporary pieces, anticipates growth as students seek to engage in a wide variety of musical styles.

The 9 p.m. Mass will remain the well-known “Candlelight Mass,” and feature a more quiet and contemplative atmosphere. With dim lighting and reflective music, this liturgy has appealed to many university students through the years, particularly as they work to find their place within a new faith community.

Both Sunday evening liturgies seek to be highly participatory and to engage the full range of symbols available in Catholic worship. The involvement from a large number of students will be evident throughout the array of liturgical ministries.

“Students at Creighton will experience vibrant, engaging worship that will strengthen and empower them during their time with us,” says Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ. “This is the Magis that we strive for – to offer our very best in the service of God.”

The first Sunday Masses of the academic year will begin Aug. 26. All are welcome!
