Cristina Fernandez, MD, professor, Department of Pediatrics, was awarded the 2017 Nebraska Humanitarian Award in honor of Harold E. Williamson from COPIC Medical Foundation. The award recognizes volunteer medical services and contributions to the community by Nebraska physicians. Dr. Fernandez was recognized at the Nebraska Medical Association’s Annual Meeting at the Embassy Suites in Downtown Lincoln on Sept. 8.
As the recipient of this year’s award, COPIC Medical Foundation provided a $10,000 grant to the health-related 501(c)(3) organization of Fernandez’s choice. Fernandez selected Families in Action to receive the grant.
Creighton student volunteers work side-by-side with Families in Action and Latino families to facilitate two-way cultural exchange, understanding and education. A few examples of Creighton partnerships at Families in Action include: community health nursing student rotations, community partnership site for Tri Delta, Center for Service and Justice service learning site, and service, intern or credit special project site for Creighton undergraduate and graduate students.
