The Kingfisher Institute and the Center for Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research (CIPER) recently partnered to create a health humanities category of IPE (interprofessional education) activities.
To support creation of these activities, faculty members in any school or college at Creighton University had the opportunity to apply for a one-time Health Humanities IPE Curriculum Innovation Fellowship of up to $1000. All activities are approved by CIPER’s IPE Curriculum Committee before being made available to students.
Joy Doll, OTD, OTR/L, the executive director of CIPER, shared about the impetus of this collaboration. Doll said, “Successful interprofessional collaboration in health care requires skills in empathy, communication and conflict engagement. These skills are built through activities in the health humanities because if we forget the humanness of health care teams, that team struggles to deliver good health care.”
Tracy Leavelle, PhD, Director of the Kingfisher Institute, added, “The Kingfisher Institute is dedicated to creating integrative learning opportunities for students from every school and college. These new health humanities IPE activities are a positive step in making this happen.”
