McHendry’s Work Featured in Exhibit on Drones in Pacific Lutheran University’s Gallery

0ed832be-9d0e-4d6c-b071-94516cf5b1c6Guy McHendry, PhD, associate professor in the department of communication studies, exhibited two pieces on drone warfare in the University Gallery at Pacific Lutheran University. The exhibition was part of Life Under Drones, a two-day symposium on the impact of drones on the world.

McHendry’s works, Lullaby I & II, are interactive mixed-media pieces that take up the theme of the Life Under Drones symposium by exploring different contexts in which humans grow up under drones. Lullaby I considers hobby drones as a fun and playful technology which augments, rather than interrupts, everyday life. Lullaby II shifts our attention to the terror drones inspire when used in combat operations. Nasser Hussain describes drone noises as: “a low-grade, perpetual buzzing, a signal that a strike could occur at any time… Because the drone can surveil the area for hours at a time, and because each round of surveillance may or may not result in a strike, the fear and anxiety among civilians is diffuse and chronic” (2013).
