Habash’s Articles to be Published in Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Martha HabashMartha Habash, PhD, associate professor and program director of Classical and Near Eastern Studies in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, has two forthcoming articles to be published in Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal.

“Five Things you Should Know about Jesuit Worldwide Learning: Higher Education at the Margins” is derived from Habash’s work with Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) and is a “Resources” paper forthcoming in Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal’s 2020 special issue on international education. This essay is both informative and provocative as it invites other Jesuit universities to live the mission that JWL encompasses.

Habash’s second article, “Learning with Students at the Margins: Creighton University’s Pilot Program with Jesuit Worldwide Learning 2017-2018,” examines the impact of the global experience on a small number of Creighton students who studied one course in the JWL diploma in liberal studies and one course that Habash designed that frames this experience. The findings from this study were particularly significant in that it measured the impact that exposure of privileged students in a global classroom with those living at the margins while working with local marginalized populations led to self-discovery, empathy, and a commitment to service for justice. These findings may very well encourage other universities to provide opportunities for their own students to study in a global classroom with those living at the margins. This article is forthcoming in 2019 in Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal.
