Students Earn INBRE Awards

Several Creighton National Institutes of Health INBRE (IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence) Scholars recently presented at the annual Nebraska INBRE meeting in Nebraska City. The INBRE project is designed to enhance the competitiveness of biomedical research in Nebraska. Creighton has been part of the Nebraska INBRE grant for 17 years. The current five-year grant is a $18 million NIH grant to support the INBRE program aimed at increasing undergraduate research experiences and producing more scientists in the state.

Awards were given at the annual meeting and Creighton students won five of the 10 awards given out. In the oral talks, awardees were first place to junior Rebekah Rapoza (working with Lynne Dieckman, PhD), second place to junior Taylor Burke (working with Garrett Soukup, PhD, and Julie Soukup, PhD), and Honorable Mention to junior Diego Gomez (working with Julie Soukup, PhD). In the poster presentations senior Eilidh Chowanec (working with James Fletcher, PhD) was awarded second place, and senior Molly Myers (working with Mike Nichols, PhD) won third place. Also of note, former INBRE Scholar and current biology faculty member, Ann Cavanaugh, PhD, was the invited INBRE Distinguished Alumni Speaker.
