The law school’s 2018 Lane Lecture, “Civil Rights Then and Now: A Conversation with the Rev. Fred Gray” took place on Jan. 15 at the Harper Center. The Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, president of Creighton University, awarded Gray with a Presidential Citation. Fr. Hendrickson and Interim Dean Michael J. Kelly, JD, LLM, gave a welcoming address before a guided conversation with Gray, Greg Rhodes, JD’81, and current law students Oluseyi Olowolafe and Kai Wahrmann-Harry took place. Gray defended Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks on disorderly conduct charges after their 1955 refusals to move to the back of buses during the Montgomery Bus Boycott protesting segregated public transportation in the Alabama capital. Gray is also the author of an autobiography, Bus Ride to Justice, as well as The Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Books were available for purchase and a book signing took place after the lecture.
