School of Law August Updates

  • Orientation for first-year law students took place Aug. 15-16. Interim dean Michael Kelly, JD, LLM, gave the opening address. Justice Max Kelch of the Nebraska Supreme Court then administered the oath of integrity and professionalism to 106 students that will become the Class of 2020.
  • Andrea Bashara, assistant dean for student affairs and special projects, who has worked at the School of Law for 20 years, moved into a new position with the provost’s office, effective Aug. 20. Bashara will be assisting with student accounts, partnerships, and processes to support the establishment of a center for professional and corporate excellence. Emily Beller, JD ’05, has been appointed interim assistant dean of student affairs and special projects while the law school conducts a search to fill this position. David Weber, JD, professor, has stepped down as senior associate dean for academic affairs. Replacing Weber is Rachel Goedken, JD, assistant professor, who was named associate dean for academic affairs. Weber is now co-chairing (with special assistant professor Charles “Shane” Ellison, JD) the new Creighton Immigrant and Refugee Clinic that opens this fall.
  • Kelly Dineen, RN, JD, PhD, assistant professor and director of the health law program, spoke at the Nebraska State Bar Association health law annual meeting on July 27. Her presentation was entitled “Sex, Drugs and Mental Health: Ethics and Policy Around Taboo Issues in Health Law Practice.” On July 31, Dineen organized and moderated a discussion group, “Hot Issues in Health Law and Public Health Ethics” at the Southeastern American Law Schools’ annual meeting in Boca Raton, Florida. On Aug. 2, Dineen presented “Ethics in Laboratory Medicine: Ethical and Legal Issues in Drug Testing” at the national meeting of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry in San Diego, California.
