As the assistant dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, Gerry Kuhlman is in charge of advising 500 students. For Gerry, his students are his top priority. He has never seen his students, but he makes it a point to remember the details about each one.
Gerry lost his eyesight shortly after birth, but he navigates around campus faster than most. Gerry jokes that he hopes to one day fly from his office in the Eppley Building to Starbucks, or hopes one day to travel to space.
From the time he was a child, Gerry says that he wanted to experience all that life has to offer.
Gerry grew up on a dairy farm in Petersburg, Neb., where he was in charge of cleaning equipment and feeding the calves.
Gerry, however, says that he had bigger aspirations.
“When I was younger I wanted to be a play-by-play sports announcer for the Kansas City Royals. As you can see, that clearly didn’t work out,” said Gerry.
Gerry attended Creighton and graduated with a psychology degree in 1993. He left Creighton for a short time, but says that he knew he would eventually return to the University.
“My time at Creighton, I can’t even describe how much I enjoyed it,” says Gerry. “I never really left Creighton in my heart and my mind.”
In his role, Gerry is not only in charge of advising 500 students and doing senior checks, he also teaches a transfer student RSP class.
“I want transfer students and all students to get the absolute most out of their time at Creighton,” says Gerry. “I hope that what they get out of their RSP class is to follow their dreams and passions. I will do anything I can to make that happen.”
